During our trip to the Trastevere district of Rome, we will also analyze the relationship between it and other areas of Rome and how to create a rich itinerary during a visit to this city while keeping Trastevere as a base to explore the rest of the city of Rome, in order to see all the beauties offered by the Italian capital.

Some time ago we started talking about the catacombs of Rome thanks to the Catacombs of San Callisto.

Briefly summarizing, the catacombs are underground cemeteries built in Rome and comprise a network of underground galleries on whose walls the dead were buried, in niches placed one above the other. In addition to this, the catacombs were often adorned with frescoes representing the dead or their families.

As mentioned, there are as many as 50 catacombs in Rome (some can be visited, others not) and we, in our articles, will take care of talking to you about all the catacombs of Rome that can be visited and how to reach them from the Trastevere district.

In today’s article, we present a new catacomb, the Catacombs of San Pancrazio, with a brief overview and telling you how to reach them from the Trastevere district.

The Catacombs of San Pancrazio

The Catacombs of San Pancrazio (also called Catacombs of Ottavilla) are located in Piazza San Pancrazio in the Gianicolense district and takes its name from San Pancrazio, the martyr who is buried in them, although he is not the only martyr buried in these catacombs.

Unfortunately, the Catacombs of San Pancrazio have not passed the years unscathed and, therefore, are in very poor conservation conditions. Most likely it is also for this reason that the Catacombs of San Pancrazio can only be visited by reservation and by very small groups of visitors at a time (maximum six people).

The Catacombs of San Pancrazio are divided into three regions, each of which has its own characteristics. Among the three regions of the Catacombs of San Pancrazio, the most noteworthy is the second, in which we find three well-known cubicles: the Botrys cubicle (known for the presence of the word Christianos on the tombstone – a word little used in cemeteries at the time Christians), the cubicle of San Felice (decorated with marine motifs – ships, fish etc … – and which dates back to the end of the third century AD) and the cubicle of Santa Sofia (in which there are four burials that are believed to belong to the saint herself and her daughters).

How to visit the catacombs of San Pancrazio

The catacombs of San Pancrazio are among the few Roman catacombs of which no trace has been lost over the centuries and it is still a catacomb that can still be visited by everyone although, as mentioned, only by reservation and by small groups of visitors at a time.

Access to the catacombs of San Pancrazio is allowed to groups only on the following days and times:

• Tuesday: 9:30 – 10:30 – 11:30
• Wednesday: 9:30 – 10:30 – 11:30 – 16:30 – 17:00
• Thursday: 9:30 – 10:30 – 11:30

An interesting thing to note is that the entrance to these ancient catacombs, unlike other catacombs, is free of charge. In other words, to enter the catacombs of San Pancrazio it will not be necessary to pay any fixed ticket, but you can make a donation (including food, as long as long-life food) which will then be donated to charities to help people who have less and, therefore, they need help.

How to reach the Catacombs of San Pancrazio from Trastevere

So here are two ways to do it!
Fortunately, the Pancrazio catacombs are quite close to Trastevere, so it won’t take long.

The first method we suggest is to take bus number 44 from Dandolo / Cassini and get off at the San Pancrazio stop. It will take a few minutes to do this. The second method, however, is to go on foot, simply starting from Trastevere and following the signs to Piazza San Pancrazio.
